Last year the group decided that we were going to redefine the Rookie of the Year trophy and the criteria for winning this award. It was decided that the Rookie of the Year trophy was to be awarded to a true Rookie one with absolutely no racing experience before sitting behind the wheel and strapping on a helmet. The True Rookie of the Year trophy went to Fred Matson.
This meant that we had to come up with a new trophy award the Top Freshman of the 2002 season. This year's recipient of this Trophy was Doug Hopper.
Top ten starts with Mike Kohut. Mikael is a product of the Hialeah Street Stock program and missed just three races for the year. He still managed to put together 4 top 5 finishes in 11 starts. Now Mikael wad having so much fun be brought the rest of the family along and his cousin Bruno bought the then 20 car from the McElroy family and renumbered it the 69. Congratulations to Mike and all his crew.
9th place goes to Don Peacock. Don drives the yellow 24 car. This car has an interesting past with our season having been drivenby the 95 and 96 Champ Steve Mermell, before Steve drove the car it was the yellow 2 car owned by Carlton Bahn and driven by Mike Franklin Jr. Don has teamed up with his old friend Gary and we look forward to a great 03 out of this team.
8th place goes to the team of Dee Powell and Steve Quick. Steve is another old Hialeah hand, Steve had one feature win in 2002 and seven top ten finishes for this year. A late in the season Steve's attempt to climb higher in the points.
The Top Ten
It going to busy up front next year as Steve recovers and comes back out strong.
7th place goes to last years Rookir of the Year Christy Boyett. Christy seemed to have her share of bad luck in her sophomore year but still had some tremendous runs this year. Picking up her trophy was her mother Nancy.
6th place goes to the driver of the Pink Cadillac is Randy Sands. Randy is a three time OLM Champion. Randy and his Dad took a year off and rebuild a Ray O'Leary mariah chassis and after a rough start managed to pull out 3 wins.
5th is Corey The Kid Collum. Corey and Family have done a wonderful job with this previously owned Dave O'steen car. Cory had one feature win in 02 and had been as high in points as 2nd in points this year and has never finished out of the top 10 in all his races this year.
4th is Phillip Brigham. Phillip has really come alive this year driving his Mothers #7 car. Phillip spent most of the year in the number 2 spot in points but some late in the season bad luck dropped him back in points. It seemed like Phillip was either running up front or riding behind a wrecker. Joining Phillip this year was his brothe Patrick driving Mary's other car.
3rd was Raymond Superfrog Jones driving Dave and Joyce O'steens 41 car. This team did an outstanding job this year with 2 feature wins and eight top 10's. Dave came to us with tons of experience driving late models on down at just about every track in FL with track championships at many. Dave had 3 cars in the top 7 spots this year and currently is building Superfrog a new car for 03.
